<description>Title: Fast and Precise Motion Control of Flexible Joint Robots via Frequency Response Data-Driven Optimization
Author(s): Deokjin Lee

본 논문은 이러한 흐름을 통해 유연 관절 로봇의 빠르고 정밀한 모션 제어를 가능하게 한다.|Most robotic manipulators transmit power through harmonic drives or other mechanical transmissions, and no such transmission is perfectly rigid. The resulting joint flexibility— whether an unavoidable byproduct of the transmission or deliberately introduced through elas- tic elements—produces lightly damped resonant and anti-resonant modes that excite structural vibration, couple the motor- and link-side dynamics, and degrade motion accuracy. Conse- quently, a broad class of robots, not only those designed to be compliant, must in fact be mod- eled and controlled as flexible joint robots （FJRs） if fast and precise motion is to be achieved. This is a demanding requirement, because the dynamics of an FJR vary substantially with the robot configuration as the reflected link inertia and the resonance frequencies shift across the workspace. Achieving high control bandwidth while preserving robust stability across the workspace is therefore the central problem addressed by this thesis, which is pursued through a dedicated hardware platform together with model-based and frequency-response data-driven control methods. First, the thesis presents the ExSLeR （Expertise Skill Learning Robot） arm, a seven- degree-of-freedom flexible joint manipulator that serves as the experimental platform of the thesis. A central design principle is that joint flexibility cannot be identified from motor-side measurements alone: characterizing it requires redundant sensing that resolves the motion of the motor and of the link separately. The arm is therefore instrumented at every joint with dual motor- and link-side encoders and a joint torque sensor, making the joint deflection and the flexible-joint dynamics directly measurable—the very capability on which the data-driven methods of this thesis rely. Designed from task-driven specifications for human skill learning and built on a deterministic real-time control architecture, the platform is validated through high-payload motion tracking and compliant interaction. Second, to suppress the vibration and disturbances caused by this joint flexibility, the thesis develops a model-based disturbance observer （DOB）. While a DOB is a principled means of re- jecting these effects, conventional joint-space DOBs operate away from the task space and lose effectiveness for workspace position control of FJRs. The thesis therefore proposes a Rotating Workspace Nonlinear Disturbance Observer （RWNDO）. Formulated on the nonlinear motor- and link-side FJR dynamics in a rotating workspace, the RWNDO decouples the inter-joint coupling, attenuates lumped disturbances, and remains robust at singular configurations, with closed-loop stability rigorously established through Lyapunov analysis. It thereby advances the conventional joint-space DOB into a single workspace design that is decoupling-capable, singularity-robust, and provably stable. Third, the thesis develops a frequency-response data-driven control framework. While model-based designs such as the RWNDO ultimately rest on an accurate nominal model, ob- taining one for an FJR is itself difficult, as the lightly damped flexible modes and configuration- dependent dynamics resist low-order parametric modeling; the proposed framework therefore attains high control bandwidth without this model dependence. Controllers are synthesized directly from experimentally measured frequency response functions （FRFs）, which capture the true resonant and configuration-dependent behavior of the plant. The synthesis is cast as a convex optimization that maximizes control bandwidth and suppresses vibration while guaranteeing closed-loop stability; following this principle, both a feedback controller and a disturbance observer are designed from the measured FRFs. Experimental validation on a seven-degree-of-freedom FJR, including high-speed drumming and hammering tasks under large inertia variation, demonstrates substantial improvements in control bandwidth, tracking accuracy, and disturbance rejection over conventional designs. Together, the hardware platform, the model-based robust control, and the data-driven con- trol framework constitute a coherent advance toward fast and precise motion of flexible joint robots. In particular, the thesis demonstrates that synthesizing controllers directly from mea- sured frequency response data is a practical and theoretically grounded means of overcoming the modeling barrier that has long limited the high-bandwidth control of flexible joints. Especially, soft bioelectronics have emerged as a promising alternative to overcome the limitations of traditional rigid material-based devices in healthcare applications. Soft bioelectronic sensors leverage their intrinsic flexibility, relatively high biocompatibility compared to the metals or plastics, and adaptability to complex human body curvatures, enabling long-term biosignal monitoring, adequate therapeutic interventions, and improved patient comfort. These features facilitate soft bioelectronic sensor as essential components of next-generation healthcare systems, offering solutions to critical challenges such as foreign body reaction of implantable devices and individual treatment based on the detection of biological signals. A particularly promising subset of soft bioelectronic sensors is 1-dimensional （1D） structured soft sensors. These 1D soft bioelectronic sensors provide unique advantages, including lightweight structure, excellent flexibility, and compatibility with fiber-based systems. Their thin geometries enable seamless integration into complex biological environments and facilitate minimally invasive surgeries. Moreover, they have the potential to minimize foreign body reactions due to the tiny surface area of the sensor. Consequently, advancing biocompatible fiber-based electrodes and sensors is essential. This dissertation focuses on the development and applications of the 1D soft bioelectronic sensors, highlighting their potential in healthcare monitoring and treatment. Here, the first topic （Chapter III） presents different approaches for fabricating conductive fiber electrodes via a chemical reduction method known as in-situ formation. The contribution of this work lies in the fabrication process that exclusively uses harmless materials, avoiding the use of toxic substances found in previous studies. Additionally, various parameters related to the fabrication process of conductive fiber electrodes have been systematically investigated. These conductive fiber electrodes were utilized in resistive or capacitive soft sensors, highlighting their potential in diverse healthcare applications. The second topic （Chapter IV） introduces a versatile electronic suture system that integrates strain sensing with on- demand drug delivery capability. The electronic suture, composed of a conductive fiber scaffold and a thermoresponsive polymer shell layer, utilizes Joule heat generated by the electrical current flowing through the conductive fiber scaffold to release the drug contained within the polymer shell. This system is directly sutured onto the wound site, where it monitors the degree of wound opening. Subsequently, it releases the drug, thereby accelerating the wound healing process. The third topic （Chapter V） describes a fiber-based bioelectronic pH-sensing suture designed for monitoring wound healing process. By tracking changes in pH levels, a critical biomarker of wound health, the pH-sensing suture enables early detection of infection and healing progress assessment. Furthermore, the continuous and reliable monitoring capability of the bioelectrical suture was demonstrated through in-vivo tests conducted on mouse models. The final topic （Chapter VI） presents a suture-type electroceutical system that is directly sutured onto inflamed tissue sites to modulate inflammatory responses through wireless electrical stimulation. This electroceutical suture is based on a conductive fiber architecture integrated with an inductive coupling-based wireless power transfer system, enabling stable electrical stimulation without the need for external wiring. The device is directly sutured onto the target tissue, where it delivers localized and selective stimulation to reduce inflammatory responses and promote tissue recovery. This approach demonstrates the potential of a next-generation therapeutic platform capable of providing effective and long-term treatment. The various 1D soft bioelectronic sensors studied in this dissertation demonstrate high flexibility, outstanding electrical performance, and high biocompatibility, providing potential for practical applications in bioelectronics and medical fields. These systems are anticipated to contribute significantly to advancing healthcare technologies and improving patient outcomes.

<description>Title: Morphology-Aware Motion Planning and Visual Navigation for Heterogeneous Mobile Robots
Author(s): Seunghyun Lim
종합하면, 본 학위논문은 형태 및 운용 조건에 의해 유발되는 병목을 적응 모듈을 통해 내비게이션에 활용 가능한 인터페이스로 변환하는 morphology-aware navigation 관점을 제시하며, 이를 compact traversability representation, 실행 가능한 local planning 및 recovery, 그리고 stabilized visual observation의 형태로 구체화하였다.|This thesis investigates motion planning and visual navigation for heterogeneous mobile robots, with a focus on how visual information should be interpreted according to robot morphology, sensing constraints, and locomotion characteristics. Although recent visual navigation models provide reusable goal-directed guidance, directly transferring a single navigation policy across wheeled, legged, and limbless robots remains difficult. Each robot morphology introduces a different bottleneck: low-cost wheeled robots require efficient traversability processing, tortoise-inspired legged robots require morphology-aware local planning and recovery, and snake-like limbless robots require stable visual perception under head oscillation.
First, this thesis develops a low-cost RGB-D wheeled mobile robot platform and a MORP-based traversability-aware navigation pipeline. The proposed representation compresses visual and depth information into compact lane-wise traversability cues, allowing efficient local planning under limited sensing and computation. This study establishes the initial form of visual traversability-aware motion planning used throughout the thesis.
Second, the thesis extends traversability-aware planning to a bio-inspired legged robot. A tortoise- inspired robot is designed and evaluated using diagonal belly-dragging locomotion. The initial application of RGB-MORP-IL shows that MORP-style planning can be transferred to a legged robot, but also reveals limitations caused by morphology-dependent command execution. To address these limitations, mono-MORP is introduced as a monocular traversability representation, and mono-MORP-RL is developed as a reinforcement-learning-based local planner for visual navigation. In simulation, mono-MORP-RL reduces the collision rate in dynamic environments from 0.80 to 0.03 and improves the success rate from 0.07 to 0.97. In real-world experiments with dynamic and out-of-distribution obstacles, it reduces the collision rate from 0.93 to 0.00 and improves the success rate from 0.07 to 0.93. Furthermore, mono-MORP-IL with an A*-guided expert and rmGAIL is introduced to address stuck recovery under MORP-style partial observability. The rmGAIL policy improves the PPO baseline success rate from 0.882 to 0.911 and reduces the timeout rate from 0.105 to 0.067 in controlled simulation benchmarks. Visual navigation task comparison shows that the rmGAIL- based mono-MORP-IL policy can be integrated into the topological visual navigation pipeline and improves dynamic and OOD obstacle performance in the tested real-world setup.
Third, this thesis studies motion planning and visual navigation for a snake-like limbless robot. Since the head orientation of a wheel-less snake robot does not reliably represent its locomotion direction, PCA-based body-shape estimation is used to estimate a stable direction of motion. This direction is used for classical path following and for camera stabilization. The thesis then identifies locomotion-induced head oscillation as a major obstacle to visual navigation. To address this problem, a CSPM-based 3-DoF head stabilizer is introduced. The stabilizer reduces the standard deviations of roll, pitch, and yaw by 95.6%, 88.0%, and 70.7%, respectively, during straight-line slithering. In topological visual navigation simulation, the robot fails in all 20 trials without CSPM but succeeds in all 20 trials with CSPM-based camera stabilization, showing that stable visual input is a prerequisite for applying visual navigation to a wheel-less snake robot. A preliminary hardware implementation further shows that CSPM reduces band-pass image-rotation RMS during physical straight locomotion and enables short-course visual navigation on a snake robot prototype.
Overall, this thesis demonstrates that morphology-aware navigation for heterogeneous mobile robots can be organized as a bottleneck-adaptation structure, in which platform-specific sensing, locomotion, and deployment bottlenecks are converted into navigation-ready interfaces through compact traversability representation, executable local planning and recovery, and stabilized visual observation.
