Author(s): Lee, Kong Rae; Chen, J.; Li, J.; Kim, J.H.
Abstract: This special issue of Asian Journal of Technology Innovation aims at contributing to academic collaborations and exchanges of scholars in Asia including CICALICS and ASIALICS members. By introducing 12 research articles, this special issue discloses how firms, individuals, and nations are striving to catch up with other advanced entities, enlarge their excellence over competitors, and cooperate among university-government-industry (triple helix) sectors. Strength of research in innovation studies lie in theoretical accounts of innovation, lively cases from the innovation’s real world, and systematic approaches to innovations. © 2017 Korean Society for Innovation Management and Economics (KOSIME).

Abstract: We propose an international economic agenda to overcome the growth limits of capitalism that can be supported by the United Nations. Sustainable Environment based global goals should be added to sustainable economy. For this, we propose dynamic balance between three sub-economies such as open innovation, closed innovation, and social innovation sub-economy. For this, we propose to set up a UN community and a long range plan.

Path-creating capability building and innovation in Korea's leading firms

Title: Path-creating capability building and innovation in Korea's leading firms
Author(s): Lee, Kong-rae
Abstract: This paper evaluates the path-creating capability (PCC) of Korea's eight leading firms based on a model composed of 16 factors. The results reveal that among the 16 factors, creativity and basic research is the weakest factor. Moreover, the results of the hierarchical cluster analysis provide a basis on which to divide the sample firms into four types of PCC patterns. The first type is characterized as cooperators with suppliers and other firms on the periphery. The second type is the new technology learners emphasizing organizational learning of new technologies. The third type is R&D-production linkers, who excel at integrating R&D with other functions. Lastly, the user responsive type excel in their relationships with their consumers. This analysis has important implications for the leading Korean firms in terms of how to strengthen their PCC in the long term. © Beech Tree Publishing 2011.

University-Industry R&D Collaboration in Korea's National Innovation System

Title: University-Industry R&D Collaboration in Korea's National Innovation System
Author(s): Lee, Kong-Rae
Abstract: This article investigates R&D collaboration between universities and firms by looking at R&D outsourcing of private firms to universities and vice versa. It was found that universities are an important research partner of private firms, although industrialists often do not trust the research capabilities of universities. It is evident that universities are accustomed to receiving agents rather than giving agents in R&D activities. This fact implies that a give-and-take culture should be cultivated in universities in order to develop university-industry R&D collaboration. It may bring about university-generated cooperative R&D with private firms if universities contract out more of their research projects to private firms. The results of our study also revealed that government policies to promote university-industry R&D cooperation have been strengthening. Two cases of government policy programmes showed that policy targets, especially to promote university-industry R&D collaboration, tend to be included not only in incumbent policy programmes but also in newly designed policy programmes. The government R&D budget has been increasingly allocated to specific policy programmes focusing on interdisciplinary cooperative R&D activities between universities and private firms. © 2014 SAGE Publications.
