Abstract
Despite the wide clinical use for the patients with Major depressive disorder (MDD), the current antidepressant medications, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have been largely limited to treat this disease timely and effectively without unnecessary effects. More seriously, our understanding of the anti-depressive mechanisms of the drugs is yet to be far beyond the elevation of serotonin level in the brain. In particular, the innate complexities of the neural system, most likely due to the heterogeneity of neuronal subpopulations, have hampered our approach to cell-type specific molecular analyses of the antidepressant actions in vivo. By utilizing biochemical, transgenic, and genomic approach, we explored cell-type specific adaptive changes in response to chronic antidepressant administration. This study may contribute to better understanding of the molecular basis underlying the therapeutic or the unnecessary actions of the SSRIs, and further to the global effort to develop the advanced therapeutics for the MDD.
