Abstract
Despite the continuous increase in the number of patients with eye diseases, efficient drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eyeball has been a great challenge. Although concentration of delivered drug could be increased by directly injecting drug into the vitreous humor, various side effects could be accompanied. Although micro/nanorobots have shown its applicability as a therapeutic delivery inside the vitreous humor, chemically surface treated carrier and the use of non-biocompatible materials doesn’t fully guarantee the clinical use of micro/nanorobots in targeted drug delivery. In this research, the magnetic nanoparticles were coated with silica for stable functionalization and better biocompatibility. On the surface of the particles, dexamethasone, one of the widely used antiinflammation drug was electrostatically loaded. Under the rotating magnetic field and without specific surface treatment, the drug-loaded magnetic nanoparticles were successfully manipulated inside the vitreous humor and also showed sustained drug release. The proposed magnetic nanoparticle demonstrated that the drug loaded magnetic nanoparticles could be manipulated inside the vitreous humor without specific surface treatment.
