핵심어: 인위적 소음, 서식지 구조, 도시 음향경관, 시각 인지, 유순성, 호흡률, 코르티코스테론, 적혈구 용적률, 까치|Urbanization transforms natural habitats into artificial environments, and anthropogenic noise generated during this process is one of the major environmental stressors experienced by urban wildlife. This study investigated Oriental Magpies (Pica serica) inhabiting urban environments to examine how habitat structure around nests shapes local noise conditions and how such noise affects behavioral and physiological responses in nestlings. The study was conducted at KAIST and the Gwanak Campus of Seoul National University. Land-cover types and road-related variables around nests were extracted using QGIS. Noise was measured in the morning and afternoon during the post-hatching auditory development period, and nestling visual cognition, behavioral response during the visual cognition experiment, docility, respiratory rate, packed cell volume, and corticosterone concentration were assessed. The results showed that noise conditions around nests were associated with various environmental variables, including road proportion, distance to campus roads, campus road width, and the proportions of forest, buildings, and grassland. In particular, higher road proportion tended to be associated with increased noise levels. Partial dependence plot analysis also revealed nonlinear relationships, threshold-like patterns, and U- shaped relationships between several environmental variables and noise metrics. These findings indicate that urban noise is not determined by a single environmental factor, but rather by the combined effects of land-use structure, traffic characteristics, vegetation, and spatial arrangement. In contrast, noise variables were not significantly associated with most behavioral and physiological indicators in nestlings. However, the degree of behavioral response during the experiment showed a negative relationship with noise variability, suggesting that behavioral responses may be more sensitive to temporal variation in noise than to continuous average noise levels. In addition, docility was more strongly affected by brood size than by noise. These results suggest that behavioral and physiological responses of magpie nestlings in urban environments cannot be explained solely by noise intensity, and that temporal noise variability, spatial context, and biological conditions such as brood size may interactively shape nestling responses. Therefore, to understand the ecological effects of urban noise, it is necessary to consider not only average noise levels, but also acoustic characteristics such as noise variability and maximum noise, as well as the ecological and developmental conditions experienced by individuals.
