The Bonghoon Kim Research Group develops next-generation microscale and nanoscale electronic systems by combining colloidal semiconductors, soft electronics, and guided self-assembly. Our early work demonstrated double-heterojunction nanorod LEDs that generate both photocurrent and electroluminescence in a single device, and we extended that soft-electronics platform into a wireless, battery-free vital-sign monitor for neonatal care. Building on these foundations, our paper on wearable sensors was featured on the cover of Nature Biotechnology, underscoring our expertise in flexible, skin-conformal electronics.
More recently, we have drawn inspiration from nature to create three-dimensional “microfliers” that glide like wind-dispersed seeds while carrying active optoelectronic and colorimetric payloads for environmental sensing. In parallel, we’re exploiting the intrinsic randomness of block-copolymer thin films to fashion nanoscale physical unclonable functions for cybersecurity, and we’re summarizing the broader advances in block-copolymer self-assembly—spanning energy harvesting, user interfaces, and security systems—for IoT hardware components. Together, these projects illustrate our commitment to merging materials innovation with practical device applications.
