| dc.description.abstract | FMRI studies have suggested a possible effect of the pleasantness of olfactory stimuli on self-face perception, but the behavioral responses and neural mechanisms for such an effect are poorly understood. Our study aimed to identify behavioral and EEG changes in perceived self-face following the presentation of olfactory stimuli. Both pleasant and unpleasant odors were rated significantly higher than air conditions in odor intensity. The unpleasant odor was significantly different from the air condition in odor pleasantness, but the pleasant odor was not significantly different from the air condition in odor pleasantness. The differences between olfactory stimuli seen in odor pleasantness were replicated in self-ratings. When an unpleasant odor was presented, it was rated significantly lower than air and a pleasant odor. Brain processing signals following the presentation of the self-face were measured using EEG, and ERP analysis revealed olfactory stimulus differences in the amplitude and latency of positive and negative peak ERPs from 50 ms after the presentation of the self-face in the left hemisphere, right hemisphere, or central position. However, negative peak ERPs from 120-200 ms did not differ between odor conditions. Correlation analyses were used to determine which of the differential ERPs were associated with significantly reduced behavioral responses when unpleasant odors were presented. Our results confirmed that positive ERP amplitude (in 300- 600 ms and 600-800 ms of right hemisphere; in 800-1000 ms of left hemisphere) was associated with self-face preference among self-face ratings, which decreased after the presentation of unpleasant odor, and negative ERP latency (in 200-300 ms of left hemisphere and 300-600 ms of right hemisphere) was associated with attractiveness among self-face ratings. We show that the pleasantness of olfactory stimuli can influence behavioral and brain signal processing of self-face perception. Our results provide insight into the neural mechanisms of how olfactory stimuli affect the processing of self-face perception. 우리의 결과는 positive ERPs ampltidue (in 300-600 ms and 600-800 ms of right hemsiphere; in 800-1000 ms of left hemisphere)는 불쾌한 후각 자극이 제시된 후 감소하는 자기 얼굴 평가 중 선호도와 관련이 있으며, negative ERP latency (in 200-300 ms of left hemisphere and 300-600 ms of right hemisphere)은 self-face ratings 중 매력도와 관련이 있음을 확인하였다. |
