| dc.description.abstract | The realization of extreme-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is fundamentally constrained by the high static power consumption and inherent optical losses associated with conventional active phase-tuning mechanisms. To address these physical bottlenecks, this dissertation investigates and experimentally demonstrates a highly scalable, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS)-actuated silicon photonics platform. The proposed platform successfully replaces traditional active tuning mechanisms, reducing the static power consumption of individual modulators to the femtowatt level. The platform is established through the sequential development of core functional building blocks. First, a MEMS phase shifter is introduced, providing stable optical modulation with less than 8.6 fW of static power consumption. Building upon this mechanism, the Gen-1 tunable coupler is developed to enable the physical routing of optical signals. To further optimize optical insertion loss and structural reliability, the Gen-2 tunable adiabatic coupler is subsequently developed. This Gen-2 switch exhibits an excess insertion loss of only 0.127 dB per switch, an extinction ratio exceeding 45 dB, and robust thermal stability across a temperature range of −40 °C to 100 °C. The system-level integration capabilities are quantitatively verified through the implementation of a large-scale programmable photonic array (PPA). The constructed re-circulating PPA integrates 73 active MEMS components, achieving an integration density of 8 gates/mm², while consuming a total static power of 1 pW. Finally, the scalability is demonstrated through the development of the focal plane switch array (FPSA) for LiDAR and beam projection applications. Progressing from an initial 8 × 8 multicast projection array, the architecture is successfully scaled to a massive 50 × 200 pixel array (Gen-2) and a 75 × 300 pixel multi-layer routing framework (Gen-3). Ultimately, the quantitative results achieved in this work establish MEMS-integrated photonics as a highly viable pathway toward extreme-scale, power-efficient optical systems.|극한 규모 광집적회로의 구현은 기존 능동형 위상 조절 방식이 지닌 높은 정적 전력 소모와 고유의 광학적 손실로 인해 근본적으로 제한받고 있다. |
