종합하면, 본 학위논문은 형태 및 운용 조건에 의해 유발되는 병목을 적응 모듈을 통해 내비게이션에 활용 가능한 인터페이스로 변환하는 morphology-aware navigation 관점을 제시하며, 이를 compact traversability representation, 실행 가능한 local planning 및 recovery, 그리고 stabilized visual observation의 형태로 구체화하였다.|This thesis investigates motion planning and visual navigation for heterogeneous mobile robots, with a focus on how visual information should be interpreted according to robot morphology, sensing constraints, and locomotion characteristics. Although recent visual navigation models provide reusable goal-directed guidance, directly transferring a single navigation policy across wheeled, legged, and limbless robots remains difficult. Each robot morphology introduces a different bottleneck: low-cost wheeled robots require efficient traversability processing, tortoise-inspired legged robots require morphology-aware local planning and recovery, and snake-like limbless robots require stable visual perception under head oscillation.
First, this thesis develops a low-cost RGB-D wheeled mobile robot platform and a MORP-based traversability-aware navigation pipeline. The proposed representation compresses visual and depth information into compact lane-wise traversability cues, allowing efficient local planning under limited sensing and computation. This study establishes the initial form of visual traversability-aware motion planning used throughout the thesis.
Second, the thesis extends traversability-aware planning to a bio-inspired legged robot. A tortoise- inspired robot is designed and evaluated using diagonal belly-dragging locomotion. The initial application of RGB-MORP-IL shows that MORP-style planning can be transferred to a legged robot, but also reveals limitations caused by morphology-dependent command execution. To address these limitations, mono-MORP is introduced as a monocular traversability representation, and mono-MORP-RL is developed as a reinforcement-learning-based local planner for visual navigation. In simulation, mono-MORP-RL reduces the collision rate in dynamic environments from 0.80 to 0.03 and improves the success rate from 0.07 to 0.97. In real-world experiments with dynamic and out-of-distribution obstacles, it reduces the collision rate from 0.93 to 0.00 and improves the success rate from 0.07 to 0.93. Furthermore, mono-MORP-IL with an A*-guided expert and rmGAIL is introduced to address stuck recovery under MORP-style partial observability. The rmGAIL policy improves the PPO baseline success rate from 0.882 to 0.911 and reduces the timeout rate from 0.105 to 0.067 in controlled simulation benchmarks. Visual navigation task comparison shows that the rmGAIL- based mono-MORP-IL policy can be integrated into the topological visual navigation pipeline and improves dynamic and OOD obstacle performance in the tested real-world setup.
Third, this thesis studies motion planning and visual navigation for a snake-like limbless robot. Since the head orientation of a wheel-less snake robot does not reliably represent its locomotion direction, PCA-based body-shape estimation is used to estimate a stable direction of motion. This direction is used for classical path following and for camera stabilization. The thesis then identifies locomotion-induced head oscillation as a major obstacle to visual navigation. To address this problem, a CSPM-based 3-DoF head stabilizer is introduced. The stabilizer reduces the standard deviations of roll, pitch, and yaw by 95.6%, 88.0%, and 70.7%, respectively, during straight-line slithering. In topological visual navigation simulation, the robot fails in all 20 trials without CSPM but succeeds in all 20 trials with CSPM-based camera stabilization, showing that stable visual input is a prerequisite for applying visual navigation to a wheel-less snake robot. A preliminary hardware implementation further shows that CSPM reduces band-pass image-rotation RMS during physical straight locomotion and enables short-course visual navigation on a snake robot prototype.
Overall, this thesis demonstrates that morphology-aware navigation for heterogeneous mobile robots can be organized as a bottleneck-adaptation structure, in which platform-specific sensing, locomotion, and deployment bottlenecks are converted into navigation-ready interfaces through compact traversability representation, executable local planning and recovery, and stabilized visual observation.
