Abstract

Biological olfactory systems can perceive nearly one trillion distinct odors using only a few hundred olfactory receptors. This feat is enabled by combinatorial coding: each odorant binds to multiple receptors in a many-to-many manner, and the resulting high-dimensional activation patterns are decoded by neural networks in the brain. Reproducing this capability in an artificial olfactory system (AOS) requires three elements— sensing materials that combine high sensitivity with channel diversity, a scalable fabrication strategy, and pattern-recognition algorithms that support real-time detection. Conventional electronic noses meet none of these fully: their metal-oxide sensors offer limited surface area, their single-material platforms lack diversity, and their machine-learning pipelines depend on slow, steady-state acquisition. This dissertation addresses these challenges by developing a chemiresistive AOS that biomimetically reproduces both the hardware—the receptor array—and the software—the pattern-recognition layer—of biological olfaction, using two complementary classes of highly porous materials: two-dimensional conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and laser-induced graphene (LIG). The work proceeds as a coherent progression from molecule, to receptor, to epithelium, to intelligent system. The foundational artificial receptor is built on the two-dimensional conductive MOF Cu3HHTP2, synthesized via a precisely controlled layer-by-layer self-assembly process. Owing to its intrinsic surface chemical reactivity, the resulting chemiresistor detects NO2 at ppb levels at room temperature, approaching the World Health Organization exposure guideline without the thermal activation required by conventional metal- oxide sensors. However, the dense, non-hierarchical film exhibits sluggish response and incomplete baseline recovery, displaying dosimetric behavior incompatible with real-time monitoring—a kinetic bottleneck that motivates the next architectural advance. To overcome this limitation, a lung-inspired LIG@Cu3HHTP2 hybrid is developed, in which microporous Cu3HHTP2 is grown on a macroporous LIG scaffold. The resulting hierarchical gas-transport pathway, analogous to the bronchial structure of the human lung, enables rapid analyte diffusion to and from the MOF active sites. The hybrid achieves a theoretical limit of detection of 0.168 ppb for NO2 with fully reversible, second-scale response and recovery. This enhancement arises from the synergy of three contributions: accelerated mass transport through the hierarchical pores, electronic structure modulation at the MOF–LIG interface, and efficient signal transduction through the conductive LIG backbone. Building on this single-receptor advance, the platform is then extended into a multichannel artificial olfactory epithelium. A one-step photothermal laser process fabricates ceria-doped LIG (CeLIG) arrays in which systematic variation of laser power and pulse density produces intentional diversity in graphitization, surface chemistry, and the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio of the in-situ formed CeOx nanocatalysts. This single-step strategy replaces the repetitive mask-based deposition that has long constrained scalable array fabrication, and the resulting ten-channel array classifies nine fragrance odorants used in the cosmetics industry with accuracy above 97%, confirming that combinatorial coding capability can emerge from a single, scalable fabrication process. Hardware and software are finally integrated to close the gap between laboratory demonstration and practical deployment, where odorants are diluted, identification must occur in real time, and analytes are typically present as multicomponent mixtures. The CeLIG array is coated with Cu3HHTP2 to assign distinct, complementary roles to the two materials—CeLIG providing selectivity through laser-tuned channel diversity, and Cu3HHTP2 providing sensitivity through MOF-driven signal enhancement. A CNN–transformer network adopts a real-time detection strategy on this hybrid array, identifying diluted single odorants as well as binary and ternary fragrance mixtures with classification accuracy above 97% while simultaneously recovering their individual concentrations. Collectively, this dissertation contributes a hardware–software co-design framework for artificial olfaction in which sensitivity and selectivity are first decoupled at the material level and then recombined through scalable laser processing, while a temporal deep-learning model translates raw sensor dynamics into real-time, quantitative olfactory perception. The trajectory traced—from molecule, to receptor, to epithelium, to intelligent system—provides a foundational blueprint for next-generation porous-material-based machine olfaction, with applications spanning environmental monitoring, healthcare, and industrial quality control.|생물학적 후각 시스템은 약 400여 종의 후각 수용체만으로도 약 1조 가지의 냄새를 구별할 수 있다.
