Abstract
“Nature does not construct complex patterns when simple ones suffice (Biochemisry, Lubert Stryer 3rd Ed. page 344)”. We are living in a complex but simple world of chemical environment. Our research aims to understand how the body interacts with the chemical cues (metabolites, fatty acids, and volatile organic compounds) generated in and out of the body, and how they affect brain function, metabolism, and infection. In this talk, we will discuss the below questions: Why do odorant receptors (ORs) express in many tissues and cells of the body beyond the nose, and what do they do? ORs are the largest subfamily of G protein–coupled receptors (GPCRs), accounting for 50% of GPCRs (388 ORs) in humans and 61% of GPCRs (1037 ORs) in mice. A novel concept based on ORs expressed in many tissues will be introduced in brain, metabolic and immune systems.
