Abstract

These conductors should exhibit high electrical conductivity while maintaining stable electrical performance under mechanical deformation. Metal particle-based composite conductors can provide high conductivity through the formation of conductive networks. However, their resistance often increases significantly under tensile strain due to percolation disconnection. Liquid metals such as eutectic gallium–indium (EGaIn) can support strain-tolerant conduction because of their metallic conductivity and fluidic deformability, but interfacial instability with silver-based metal fillers can limit their effectiveness. In this study, liquid-solid metal nanocomposite conductors were developed based on interfacial engineering between silver-based flakes and EGaIn. Gold-coated silver flakes were introduced to form Au- coated interfaces that suppress direct interaction between silver flakes and EGaIn and improve the stability of the liquid metal–solid metal interface. The gold-coated silver flakes were synthesized through a chemical Au coating process and incorporated with EGaIn and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix to fabricate stretchable composite conductors. The addition of EGaIn to silver flake-based conductors increased the electrical conductivity from 25,703 to 42,060 S/cm, but the relative resistance change remained high, reaching 148.61 at 100% strain. In contrast, the gold-coated silver flake-based conductor containing EGaIn exhibited a high conductivity of 37,860 S/cm and a reduced ΔR/R₀ of 56.87 at 100% strain. EDS mapping suggested that the Au-coated interface improved the wetting and distribution of EGaIn on the conductive filler network. These results demonstrate that Au-coated interfaces are effective for improving the electromechanical stability of EGaIn-containing stretchable composite conductors.
