Abstract

납 활자 인쇄 기술의 퇴출은 지난 백 년 동안의 인쇄 출판 시장에서 가장 큰 사건이었다. 한국 문학은 이 시기의 되돌릴 수 없는 변화를 어떻게 기억하고 있을까? 그 최후의 장면을 기록한 소설로 김하기의 ｢노역장 이야기｣(1990)와 최일남의 󰡔만년필과 파피루스󰡕(1996)가 있다. 이 작품에선 납 활자 인쇄 기술의 정상적 생산 과정이 아니라, 그 일이 실패하거나 고장 나는 순간이 역사화 된다. 이 기술에 연동된 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화의 영역들도 다른 삶의 가능성을 드러내 보인다. 사라진 문선공들의 마지막 나날은 우리 시대의 노동과 맞닿아 있다. 매체와 기술 환경 변화에 떠밀려 도태된 대표적인 직업이라는 일반적 인식과 달리, 오늘날 우리가 처한 노동 현실이 비정상이라는 것을 드러내는 기준점이 문선공과 그들의 일터인 납 활자 인쇄소이다. 어떻게 이곳은 일세기 넘도록 산업 생태계의 변화에서 살아남을 수 있었을까? 문선공을 기억하고 의미를 발견한 문학을 찾아 역사적 맥락을 살펴봤다.

Regression of printing technique for lead type was the biggest event on the printing publication market. How does Korean literature remember this irreversible period? The book called ｢The Story of the Workers' Hall (노역장 이야기)｣ (1990) by Kim Haki (김하기) and 󰡔Fountain pen and Papirus (만년필과 파피루스)󰡕 (1996) by Choi Il Nam explained the situation. This work does not describe the normal production process of printing technique for lead type but describes moments when the printing technique breaks down or fails. The areas of politics, economy, society, and culture interlocked with this technique also reveal other possibilities of life. The last day of now-defunct type picker is in line with labor of our time. Unlike the current general recognition that a type picker is a typical job fallen behind by changes in the media and technology environment, the standard point that reveals that the reality of labor of the situation that we face is abnormal is a type picker and lead type printing house. How could this place survive changes in the industrial ecology for over a century? I examined the historical context with the literature that remembers a type picker and the meanings.
