- Sustainable Chemistry Laboratory

The Sustainable Chemistry Laboratory, led by Professor Kim Seong Kyun, pioneers eco-friendly solutions across water, energy, and materials science. Our work on Atmospheric Water Harvesting employs advanced sorbents (e.g., MOFs, silica gels) and passive collection methods to extract potable water from air—even in arid regions—toward decentralized, low-energy water supply systems. In Water Desalination and Purification, we develop solar-thermal desalination devices built from sustainable materials, leveraging sunlight to convert seawater into fresh water with minimal fossil-fuel consumption. To enhance Li-ion Battery Safety, we design lightweight, impact-resistant aerogels with intrinsic flame-retardant properties, preventing thermal runaway and inter-cell fire propagation. Finally, our Biomass Materials research valorizes wood and non-wood feedstocks into nanocellulose and biodegradable polymers, while Waste Upcycling projects transform paper, plastics, and food waste into high-value chemical products.
